I really respect you n how well you express your opinions so I'd like to hear your thoughts on this: I recently saw someone tag one of the Platelet girls with #loli and asked them to not do that. While the word technically does just refer to young cute characters in anime I feel like it's become too tied in with sexualization of minors and felt uncomfortable seeing the Platelets referred to like that. Am I in the wrong or would you agree?

I would have to agree, because the term was first coined in a book called “Lolita”, which referenced a middle-aged man, who was sexually attracted to a prepubescent girl, and so the term was rooted from there. It is literally referring to the erotic interest in kids, but is now closely associated with fiction in context to the manga industry. The manga industry later adopted the term to refer to the voyeurism of young kids and became a genre of its own, being referred to as “lolicon”, because it sold well in the mass market, and became frequent in the 80’s, which pandered to young adults. As for the Platelets, they are simply kids, it’s pretty annoying when people label them with a term that has sexual connotation. I’m not gonna dwell further on this topic, but the term “loli” is sexual in nature and does not refer to “cute” kids”, but rather to the sexualization of them. |:(

Hey Orteil! I've been playing Cookie Clicker for several years and I've always wondered how does the game handle big numbers. I am currently nearing 10^40 total cookies baked and I'm beginning to worry about my PC performance. Is it reasonable?

javascript handles big numbers by simply removing precision as the number gets bigger, ie. at some point it stops making a difference between 9,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,993 and 9,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,997 (actual numbers may vary); this is okay in our case because if you’re making trillions of cookies per second it doesn’t really matter if it skips a dozen here and there. the number variable still takes up the same amount of memory and probably takes about as much computation time no matter its value

if there’s anything in the game that gobbles up cycles, it’s the fancy visual effects i can’t seem to stop using and my unoptimized 5 year old codebase (which is fairly brittle, tangled up and tricky to update in meaningful structural ways - the way i code these days is much more flexible); i’d suggest disabling as many graphic settings as you can if you’re worried about performance

here’s a neat article if you want to read more about how numbers are handled in javascript ! https://modernweb.com/what-every-javascript-developer-should-know-about-floating-points/
