So we actually watched Sausage Party and it’s TRULY a shame that 1) the animators were underpaid and 2) the script is so so bad because not only does it have some fun concepts (look at this bubblegum guy!) but I would for real describe its visuals as “stunning,” far beyond anything Pixar has ever done. Its use of COLOR, the staging, the motion, the textures, they are absolutely breathtaking. A technical masterpiece. Art direction to bring you to tears.
……For a movie in which 90% of the humor is that cartoon characters are saying “fuck” a lot.
A glimmer of genuine writing quality surfaces when this movie STOPS trying to be “ “ “ “ funny “ “ “ “ and has darker or more tense little moments. It’s actually not half bad at those.
I will say there are four or five things in it that I would call somewhat humorous, perhaps funnier because they stand out in a sea of comedic vacuum, and of course they’re mostly the cleanest, corniest jokes in the whole thing.
Immediately afterwards we watched the other CG food movies, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, my second time seeing them and just SO funny and heartfelt in comparison but boy are we just so fucking hungry now

as rev pointed out first while we were watching, just the black outlines on these eyes, the implication of actual SOCKETS, makes such an incredibly pleasant difference over other mainstream character designs, as do the minimal or totally absent corneas in most of the Sausage Party designs.
Eyes are such an important part of characters and I know I’ve gone on this rant before but the eyes used by every single other cg movie are SO bland, especially Pixar, who hasn’t updated how they do eyeballs in their entire existence:

For that matter, why does almost every single character in every other CG movie have the exact same perfect teeth? Perfect, barely differentiated white bars, almost every damn time.
The dumb fucking edgy hot dog movie on the other hand….

GOD it’s making me sadder and sadder that this wasn’t a nicer written and funnier movie. I feel like I could do a whole load of posts analyzing its art.
