“Would you pass me the sodium chloride, mother?”

“…mother?”

But Old Sheldon’s words fall on long-deaf ears. He is alone, lying in his bed in the nursing home. Even the laugh track, once acting as a punctuation to everything he said, has long-since abandoned him.

A nurse’s assistant walks in to his room, holding a tray of food.

“Who are you talking to, Mister Cooper?” She asks. She knows the answer to this question already, as this is the third time Old Sheldon has asked his mother to pass the salt this afternoon. She’s simply going through the motions, as she does for all of her other patients.

“I… I guess nobody,” Old Sheldon admits, quietly.

“Alright then, Mister Cooper. Let me know if you need anything, okay?” Says the nurse’s assistant. She sets the tray of food on Old Sheldon’s lap and exits the room.

Old Sheldon looks down at his plate of food. A smile crawls across his face, and he turns to his side.

“Would you pass me the sodium chloride, mother?”

But nobody answered.
