To celebrate Kirby’s 25th Anniversary, I made some pre-rendered sprites of one of my favorite Kirby bosses, Heavy Mole, in the style of Super Mario RPG! While it may seem that pre-rendered sprites like this would be easier to create than regular sprites, a good amount of effort is required to choose the palette and clean up the sprites to make them more legible. For the sake of the viewing angle, I removed the features on the underside and used the half-blinking eyelid to give an angrier appearance.
Here’s something to think about: a boss from a Kirby game on the NES was recreated as a 3D model in the style of a Smash Bros.game on the Wii and then rendered into sprites in the style of a Mario game on the SNES. I bet it would be a dangerous boss to face. Watch out for its powerful Boulder attack!
